UNITED METHODIST MEN

United Methodist Men

Note: Methodist Men officer elections will be held during the August meeting.  We have moved the elections a couple of months earlier than usual to give the new Board (President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer) the opportunity to settle in and prepare for the Wild Game Dinner held in January.   All Men who are interested in serving in a leadership role are invited to submit their names to Robert Stringer (current SUMM Secretary).

All men of SUMC are invited to participate in the service and fellowship of the Salado United Methodist Men. The Men meet on the second Thursday of each month (see the Events Calendar for exact dates and times), to enjoy a fellowship meal and to discuss upcoming activities.  Our ministry focuses on support to our church, our youth, and the surrounding community. Throughout the year, we participate in many activities - improving the church grounds, supporting youth programs, fast food concessions sales, and much much more.  Our keystone event is our Annual Wild Game Dinner, held early in the year (this year's was held on February 22, 2009). We serve up a feast of exotic (and traditional) meats, side dishes, and deserts. The event features live entertainment and a silent auction. This family oriented event is a mainstay of Salado's winter social scene!  Membership in open to all adult male members of SUMC.  Come to a meeting soon and see what we are all about!

A Letter to the Salado United Methodist Men from your President (January 2009)

A year ago I introduced myself to all of you in a letter. I asked US, the men, to join together to help our Church through a time of change. To “step forward in fellowship with help, leadership, and Grace. To assure that the next chapter in the history of our Church will be one we all can be proud of ”.  Here is what you, the SUMM, so far have contributed to this Proud Chapter of our history:

  • We bid farewell to Grady and welcomed Travis as our Pastor - I don’t think we scared Travis that bad, as his support of our group is unwavering and greatly appreciated.
  • We took on and finished, edging the Church parking lot borders, laying sod outside the office area, putting stone down in the playground area, and made progress on cleaning and raking the Church grounds.
  • We contributed to the Youth Group’s Volley Ball Court, laying sod and removing the brush around the area to make it a safe place for our children to enjoy.
  • We worked with the Boy Scouts, contributing to a project, which was completed by Scout Gene Radebaugh, and earned him his Eagle rank.
  • We sent teams to the Glen Lake Encampment and Cross Plains Missions.
  • We assisted with the SUMC Children’s Easter and Halloween parties.
  • We contributed to help replace the Church’s failed computer audio and visual equipment.
  • We held a Fall Fundraiser and contributed 2 deep fryer cookers to the Church for use by all and $1,000 to the pay down on our Church’s debt.
  • We agreed to assist with Habitat for Humanity when they start their Salado projects.
  • We enjoyed listening to Army hero, Capt. Nathan Self; historian Charlie Turnbo; and sculptor Troy Kelly, as guest speakers at the Church, open for all to attend.
  • After the Smith Bluff Flood, the UMM joined together with the Methodist Youth and cleared debris from the creek helping make it flowable again.
  • We contributed $1,000 to help start the Stephen’s Ministry.
  • We contributed $500 to our Brother Church in Belton to help them offset expenses to help shelter Hurricane Ike refugees from the Gulf Coast.
  • We held a successful Wild Game Dinner, with help from, and our thanks to, the Women of the Church, inspirational speaker Hank Hough, and The Blue River Band.  That one event has supported our Missions throughout the past year.
  • We assisted with many other small but important missions, including contributing to, and making sure the Church kitchen was clean after our meetings.
  • This year we are continuing to work hand in hand with the Boy Scouts and Youth Group projects, events and missions. We will again send a team to the Glen Lake Camp Mission.
  • We will continue to improve the Church grounds, making the best use of the space we have, repairing the portable buildings and painting them, building a wood fence around the electrical transformer, and finish laying sod in the shaded areas. We will be helping again with the children’s Easter and Halloween parties and any other children events the church needs us for.
  • We plan to get more involved with community events through the Salado Chamber of Commerce, to which our Church belongs.
  • We hope to hold an even bigger and more successful Wild Game Dinner in 2009. We will strive to always be available to help our Church and Community, and to continue building fellowship among the two. We will continue to keep the kitchen clean after our meetings.

All this was accomplished with an average of less than a dozen men attending meetings and working on our missions.

If just five more men will get involved, just think of all we can do in the coming year.  I hope YOU will be one of that five.

Thanks and God Bless,
Nelson Lewis
