We support the United Methodist Church in Kenya, Africa
In the fall of 2007 our church entered into a partnership with the Kaaga Synod of the Methodist Church in Kenya, Africa. The Synod’s Bishop is the Rev. William Muruiki. The Synod includes 170 Methodist churches in and around Meru, Kenya 5 hours northeast of Nairobi. This past spring we helped fund a new computer lab and library for a senior high school sponsored and run by the Methodist Church there. The principal of the school is the wife of Bishop Muruiki, Catherine. The Bishop and Catherine visited our church in November of 2007 and shared with our church the great need of the people of Kenya, and the Methodist Churches efforts to meet those needs in the name of Jesus Christ.
One of our 2009 goals is to provide support to the Methodist Church in Meru, Kenya.
On January 19th, Dr. Ken Diehm, pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Grapevine led an informative meeting relating to his 3 previous trips to Meru, and the powerful experiences and relationships he has built there.
Five members of SUMC, including Pastor Travis, along with several participants from FUMC Grapevine made a mission trip to Kenya from June 18th - July 2nd, 2009. During the trip, the team posted periodic updates on their activities and experiences - check them out on the new SUMC blogsite.
